Volcanoes and most beautiful villages
The Auvergne is a great outdoor destination, for activities of course, but also for local patrimony and handicraft.
A unique volcanic landscape, one of the region’s main curiosities. The Chaîne des Puys volcanic range stretches for more than 30km. Its highest summit, the Puy de Dôme, reaches up to an altitude of 1,465m and offers an unbeatable view over the other volcanoes and the surrounding landscapes. Further south, the volcanoes of the Cantal, with the Puy Mary rising up to 1,758m, is the largest group of stratovolcanoes in Europe, with an area of 2,700 square kilometers. This natural treasure, dormant for thousands of years, is a wonderful place for outdoor activities.
In addition to the natural landscape, the Auvergne also hosts 9 villages officially listed as the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”. Their charm, history and quality as tourist destinations are rewarded through this quality label. Each of them has its own attractive heritage and is home to numerous artists and craftsmen. Please find more information about the following “Most Beautiful Villages in France”: Charroux, Montpeyroux, Usson, Salers, Tournemire, Arlempdes, Blesle, Lavaudieu, Pradelles.
